St. Kizito Primary School in Kasasa Sub County, Kyotera District, has been chosen as the first beneficiary of the new EACOP Green Schools Initiative, a collaboration between East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) Ltd. and Rotary Uganda. The program seeks to transform schools along the EACOP route into hubs of sustainability, blending hands-on environmental education with practical learning opportunities for students.
The initiative follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed in August 2025, which sets out plans to expand the program to ten districts, including Hoima, Kikuube, Kakumiro, Mubende, Kyankwanzi, Lwengo, Kyotera, Rakai, Sembabule, and Gomba. Its core mission is to foster green, resilient, and resource-conscious learning spaces.
As part of the program, participating schools will benefit from solar power systems, fruit and vegetable gardens, rainwater harvesting setups, improved sanitation and handwashing facilities, and structured waste management programs. Beyond infrastructure upgrades, the initiative will also run environmental education campaigns, teaching students practical skills in sustainability, hygiene, and eco-conscious living.
JB Habumugisha, Deputy Managing Director of EACOP Ltd., stressed the program’s dual focus: meeting immediate community needs while preparing the next generation of environmental champions. “Introducing green practices in schools equips children with the knowledge and habits to care for their communities,” he said.
Geoffrey Kitakuule, Governor of Rotary Uganda District 9213, highlighted the vital role of schools in fostering long-term environmental awareness. “Investing in children today creates adults who value and protect the environment. Our partnership with EACOP broadens the program’s reach and impact,” he noted.
Christine Kyeyune Kawooya, Governor of District 9214, described the initiative as a movement rather than a one-off program. “It empowers teachers and students alike to champion healthier, greener environments, laying the foundation for sustainable community development,” she said.
The launch event brought together EACOP representatives, Rotary Uganda officials, local government leaders, and school administrators, all celebrating the partnership’s tangible outcomes. With upgraded facilities, interactive environmental programs, and hands-on learning, the Green Schools Initiative promises to redefine education while promoting eco-friendly communities along the EACOP corridor.
