The Government of Uganda has introduced an innovative solution aimed at transforming the lives of small-scale traders across the country. Through the Microfinance Support Centre (MSC), the Katale Affordable Loan has been launched to provide low-cost, accessible credit to market vendors.
This initiative seeks to address the challenges faced by these traders, who have long been at the mercy of high-interest informal lending systems.Speaking during the announcement, Tadeo Atuhura, the MSC Communications Manager, expressed enthusiasm about the loan facility. He explained that the government’s decision to roll out the Katale loan was driven by the need to offer small traders a lifeline in the form of quick, affordable financial support.
The facility aims to empower traders by allowing them to access funds that will help grow their businesses and stabilize their income sources. With an interest rate of just 8% per year, the Katale Affordable Loan is designed to be a viable alternative to the predatory loans that many traders have been forced to rely on. The scheme primarily targets vendors in bustling urban markets such as Owino, Nakasero, Kalerwe, Busega, Gaba, and Nakawa in Kampala. It is also expanding to markets outside the capital, including Iganga, Soroti, and Arua, ensuring that traders from various regions have access to this crucial resource.Atuhura emphasized that the loan would be accessible via a group-based lending model.
Traders who wish to apply for the loan must form groups of 10 individuals who collectively guarantee one another’s repayment. This collaborative approach not only minimizes the risks for lenders but also encourages a sense of responsibility and mutual support among the traders. The loans, which range from Shs 50,000 to Shs 2 million depending on the borrower’s repayment capacity, are collateral-free. This is particularly significant, as it opens doors for traders who might otherwise be excluded from traditional banking services. MSC believes this model will help nurture financial discipline and sustainable business practices, which are essential for long-term growth.
The Katale Affordable Loan product is expected to make a real difference for traders, particularly those who have struggled with high-interest loans from commercial banks and informal lenders. The ease of access to these loans, combined with the affordability and flexibility of the repayment terms, has been welcomed by early beneficiaries.Joan, an onion seller at Nakasero Market, shared her positive experience with the loan product, noting that the application process was quick and simple. She was impressed with the speed at which the funds were disbursed, directly to her mobile phone. She also appreciated the guidance provided on how to effectively manage the loan to ensure future access to credit.Faridah, another market vendor, echoed Joan’s sentiments, explaining that the Katale loan had provided relief after years of struggling with expensive commercial bank loans. She expressed confidence in her ability to repay the loan and grow her business, thanks to the affordable and accessible terms offered by the government’s initiative. This new loan scheme is seen as a significant step in improving the financial inclusion of Uganda’s small-scale traders, and the MSC’s ongoing support for these vendors will be key in ensuring the success and sustainability of their businesses. The Katale Affordable Loan is not only a financial product; it is a tool for empowerment and a brighter future for the country’s informal economy.
