Veteran opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye is reportedly unconscious and receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Mulago Hospital following his collapse during court proceedings, according to an update from his wife, Winnie Byanyima.
Byanyima said Besigye’s condition remains worrying, revealing that the former presidential candidate is unable to speak and is not responding to pain stimuli while under medical care.
“He is unconscious at the ICU in Mulago Hospital,” Byanyima said in a statement shared as concern continues to grow over Besigye’s health.
She added that her husband had been admitted to the ICU after his sudden collapse in court and that doctors were closely monitoring his condition.
“He has been admitted to the ICU at Mulago Hospital. He is unconscious, unable to speak, and unresponsive even to a pain stimulus,” she stated.
The update is the most detailed information provided by Besigye’s immediate family since the veteran politician collapsed during court proceedings.

The incident happened as proceedings in his case were ongoing, with Besigye protesting against the continuation of the trial and raising concerns over legal representation.
According to reports, Besigye collapsed inside the courtroom, prompting immediate concern from his lawyers, family members and political supporters.
He was later transferred to Mulago Hospital, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit for further medical attention.
Byanyima appealed to Ugandans to pray for the opposition leader while also calling for justice and proper handling of his situation.
“Please join me in praying for Dr Kizza Besigye and demanding justice,” she said.
Several opposition figures also confirmed that Besigye had been taken to the ICU, expressing concern over his condition.
Former Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura said Besigye’s sister and personal doctor, Dr Olive Kobusingye, had been allowed access to him at the hospital.
“Dr. Kizza Besigye has been admitted to the ICU at Mulago Hospital. His sister and personal doctor, Dr. Olive Kobusingye, has now been granted access. KB is still unconscious,” Nyanjura said.
Other political allies also called upon Ugandans to pray for the veteran opposition figure as his health situation continued to attract national attention.
Dr. Kizza Besigye’s collapse has sparked debate across the country, with supporters questioning the circumstances surrounding his medical condition and treatment.
His lawyers and political allies had previously raised concerns about his health, especially during the ongoing court proceedings.

National Unity Platform leader Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, said Besigye had remained unconscious since he collapsed in court.
“We’re informed that since the time Dr. Besigye eventually collapsed in Court, he is still unconscious,” Bobi Wine said.
Besigye’s condition has now become the main focus as his family, doctors and supporters continue to monitor his recovery.
The veteran opposition leader has been a major figure in Uganda’s politics for several decades and previously served as President Yoweri Museveni’s personal doctor before becoming one of his strongest political challengers.
The medical reports shared by his family have not yet been independently verified through an official statement from Mulago Hospital or the Ministry of Health.
Meanwhile, calls for prayers, compassion and transparency continue as Ugandans await further updates about Dr. Besigye’s health condition.
