Police have confirmed the deaths of 14 people following a devastating road crash along the Kampala–Masaka Highway in Lwera Swamp, Kalungu District, with authorities continuing investigations to establish the exact circumstances that led to the tragedy.
The fatal accident occurred on Monday night, August 3, 2026, at around 11:00pm near Kamunga Trading Centre, when a Toyota Hiace taxi registration number UA 662AQ collided with a Sino truck registration number UBS 040F that was carrying sand.
According to preliminary findings by police, all the 14 people who lost their lives were passengers travelling in the taxi. They were pronounced dead at the scene after suffering severe injuries caused by the heavy impact of the collision.
The force of the crash left the taxi completely damaged, trapping some of the occupants inside before emergency responders and local residents arrived at the scene. The magnitude of the accident shocked residents and motorists who witnessed the aftermath.
Four other people survived the deadly crash but sustained injuries and were immediately rushed to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for medical attention. Two of the injured victims were travelling in the taxi, while the other two were occupants of the truck.
Police teams visited the scene shortly after the accident and began collecting evidence as part of efforts to understand what caused the deadly collision. Investigators examined the vehicles involved and gathered information from witnesses who may help in reconstructing events before the crash.

Authorities have also launched a search for the driver of the Sino truck, who reportedly fled from the scene shortly after the accident. Police believe that locating the driver will be crucial in helping investigators establish whether factors such as speeding, reckless driving or other road offences contributed to the crash.
The Kampala–Masaka Highway, particularly the Lwera Swamp area, has repeatedly recorded serious road accidents over the years. The location has raised concern among road safety stakeholders due to frequent crashes involving passenger vehicles and heavy trucks.
Road safety experts have previously warned motorists using the busy highway to exercise extra caution, especially when driving at night when visibility is reduced and fatigue can increase the risk of accidents.
Police have reminded drivers to always observe traffic rules, avoid dangerous overtaking, maintain safe speeds and ensure that their vehicles are in good mechanical condition before starting journeys.
The tragedy has once again highlighted the urgent need for stronger enforcement of road safety measures on Uganda’s major highways. Authorities continue to encourage motorists to prioritize human life by avoiding careless decisions behind the wheel.
Residents near Kamunga Trading Centre expressed sadness over the loss of lives, describing the crash as one of the most devastating incidents recorded in the area in recent times.
Emergency teams and members of the public worked together to respond to the accident, but the severity of the crash meant that many victims could not survive despite efforts to rescue them.
The identities of the deceased victims were later established by police as families and relatives were informed about the tragic loss. The confirmation of the names brought grief to communities that lost loved ones in the accident.
The deaths have left families mourning parents, children, relatives and friends who were travelling along the Kampala–Masaka route before the tragedy struck.

Police have assured the public that investigations are being conducted thoroughly and that anyone found responsible for causing the accident will face the law.
Authorities have also appealed to the public to provide any information that may assist in locating the missing truck driver and understanding the events that led to the crash.
The latest accident adds to the growing number of road fatalities reported in Uganda, where speeding, reckless driving, overloading and poor road discipline remain among the leading causes of deaths on highways.
Transport operators have been urged to ensure that drivers are properly trained, rested and committed to protecting the lives of passengers who depend on public transport every day.
As investigations continue, police are expected to release more details regarding the cause of the crash and possible charges against those found responsible.
The nation continues to mourn the 14 lives lost in the Lwera Swamp accident, while authorities renew calls for collective responsibility among all road users to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
