The government has warned Kampala traders that they will not be compensated for losses caused by flooding, saying investigations found that the recent floods were not primarily caused by the Nakivubo drainage channels.Minister of State for Kampala City Affairs Christopher Kabuye Kyofatogabye urged traders to prepare for heavy rains expected between August and December 2026 and take measures to protect their businesses.
Kyofatogabye blamed flooding on several factors, including construction on wetlands, water channels and natural water pathways, which he said obstruct the free movement of rainwater. He also commended businessman Hamis Kiggundu for supporting efforts to clear parts of the Nakivubo drainage system, saying the works have improved water flow.“
The problem currently is with other landlords who built on water sources,” the minister said.He urged traders, residents and developers to comply with construction guidelines and take responsibility for protecting their property during heavy rains, maintaining that government will not compensate future flood-related losses.
