Major General Abdallah Nyembo has officially assumed command of the Third Defence Zone of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), taking over from Lieutenant General Pacifique Masunzu, who was arrested over the weekend in Kisangani along with his deputy, Brigadier General Bwange Safari.
The two senior officers were swiftly transported to Kinshasa, where they are facing charges of treason, including accusations of failing to prevent the capture of Nzibira in Walungu Territory by M23/AFC rebels on September 21. The fall of Nzibira, a key strategic location in South Kivu, has heightened tensions within the FARDC leadership and increased scrutiny of those responsible for military operations in the region.General Masunzu, a prominent Munyamulenge officer, had long been considered a loyal and influential figure within the military and was appointed by President Félix Tshisekedi in December 2024 with the goal of stabilizing the frontlines and halting rebel advances in the volatile east. His arrest marks a stunning turn of events for a commander once seen as essential to the government’s strategy in countering the M23/AFC insurgency.
During the official handover ceremony, General Nyembo, who now takes charge of one of the country’s most critical military zones, pledged to tighten operational oversight, improve coordination, and strengthen the FARDC’s defensive capabilities. In his first remarks as commander, Nyembo emphasized the importance of maintaining discipline and ensuring that no ground is lost to the region’s numerous armed groups. “Our mission is clear: protect the population, reinforce discipline, and ensure no ground is lost to armed groups,” he stated.
The reshuffling within the FARDC’s leadership is seen as part of a broader effort by Kinshasa to restore accountability and confidence within the military amid increasing pressure to regain lost territory and stabilize conflict-affected areas in eastern DRC. The Third Defence Zone, which encompasses parts of North Kivu, South Kivu, and Maniema provinces, remains at the heart of the government’s security efforts, with ongoing military operations aimed at pushing back the M23/AFC rebels and other armed groups entrenched in the region.
General Nyembo’s appointment is expected to be a pivotal moment in the DRC’s military strategy, as the government works to reassert control over the region and regain the trust of both the population and military forces. The challenges ahead are significant, but the leadership change signals Kinshasa’s determination to confront the insurgency head-on and restore stability in the east.
