Violence broke out in Yumbe District on Friday evening, leaving five people injured as rival political supporters clashed during a campaign rally, just days before Uganda’s January 15 general elections. The confrontation occurred in Tuliki Village, Arilo Sub-County, during the final rally for Aringa North parliamentary aspirant Karimu Musa, also known as Komoro.
Police reports indicate that trouble began when supporters of the incumbent, Hon. Onzima Godfrey, appeared at the rally with campaign posters. Their presence reportedly angered a rival group, who then allegedly attacked them using sticks and pangas. The situation quickly spiraled out of control, resulting in multiple injuries among villagers.
The injured have been identified as Abdul Hamid Nuru, 32; Chandiga Adinan, 51; Taban Yasin, 32; Manager Jawad, 21; and Yope Said, 47. All five are local peasant farmers from various parishes in Yumbe District and members of the Aringa ethnic community, illustrating how ordinary citizens are often caught in the crossfire of political disputes.
Police officers rushed to the scene, taking statements from witnesses and issuing Police Forms 3 to the victims to ensure they received proper medical attention. The authorities emphasized that documenting the injuries was crucial for further investigations.
One suspect, Andruga Swadick, also known as Angolibo and serving as LC1 Chairperson of Abiriirua Village, has been arrested and is assisting police with ongoing inquiries. The case is currently under investigation at Yumbe Central Police Station as officers work to determine the exact circumstances of the attack.
SP Collins Asea, North West Nile Regional Police spokesperson, condemned the violence and warned that anyone found inciting or participating in electoral clashes would face strict legal action. He urged political leaders and their supporters to act responsibly and respect the law.
The incident highlights the heightened political tensions in the region ahead of the nationwide polls. Similar clashes have been reported in neighboring Madi-Okollo District and Nebbi Municipality, fueling fears that political rivalries could ignite more violence if not checked.
Authorities continue to call for calm, stressing that the electoral process should remain peaceful and orderly. With the elections just days away, the focus is on preventing further incidents and ensuring that citizens can participate safely without fear of intimidation or attacks.
