Iran has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening relations with Uganda following a diplomatic briefing hosted by newly appointed Foreign Affairs Minister Hon. Amb. Adonia Ayebare for members of the diplomatic corps in the country.Iranian Ambassador to Uganda, His Excellency Majid Saffar, attended the briefing, which marked one of Ayebare’s first engagements with foreign representatives since taking charge of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Iranian Embassy described the meeting as insightful and expressed optimism about continued cooperation between the two countries. In a message shared on X, the Iranian Embassy congratulated Ayebare on his new appointment and wished him success in his new role. The Embassy said it looked forward to working with the new Foreign Affairs leadership to further strengthen the longstanding relationship between Iran and Uganda. The engagement comes as Ayebare begins his tenure at the Ministry, taking over from Gen. Jeje Odongo. A career diplomat and Uganda’s former Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Ayebare brings extensive diplomatic experience to the ministry at a time when Uganda is seeking to expand its international partnerships.Uganda has continued to promote stronger relations with countries across Africa, Asia, the Middle East and other parts of the world, with a particular focus on trade, investment, development cooperation and South-South partnerships. The new Foreign Affairs leadership is therefore expected to maintain and build on these diplomatic engagements.Uganda and Iran have maintained diplomatic relations and cooperation in several areas, including trade, investment, education, agriculture, energy and political consultations.
The two countries have also interacted through multilateral platforms, with Iran being a member of the Non-Aligned Movement, which Uganda currently chairs. The meeting between Ayebare and Ambassador Saffar is therefore seen as an early indication of Iran’s willingness to maintain close diplomatic contact with Kampala under the new leadership. Such engagement could provide opportunities for the two countries to explore additional areas of cooperation and strengthen existing partnerships. As Ayebare settles into his new position, continued engagement with Uganda’s diplomatic partners will be central to his mandate. The Iranian Embassy’s message signals a willingness to work with him, while the briefing provides a platform for Uganda to strengthen dialogue with foreign missions and advance its broader diplomatic and economic interests.:::
