MTN MoMo has officially partnered with Lira City to take over the management of Lira Main Market, aiming to modernize one of the city’s busiest commercial hubs. The initiative, launched in collaboration with city officials, focuses on cleaning, beautification, and improving safety and hygiene for traders and visitors alike.
The handover ceremony brought together Mayor Sam Atul, city administrators, the Resident City Commissioner, MTN MoMo representatives, and local market vendors, highlighting a collaborative effort between public authorities, private sector actors, and community members. The event emphasized civic responsibility and the shared goal of fostering a thriving urban market.Immediately after the official handover, a large-scale cleaning drive began.
Streets were swept, waste cleared, and public areas organized, reflecting the city’s vision of transforming Lira into a modern, green, and economically vibrant urban center.Phillip Odoi, MTN Uganda’s Regional Commercial Head, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainable urban development. “Through MTN MoMo, we are proud to support Lira’s growth by creating cleaner, safer, and more attractive spaces. This project shows how technology and community engagement can work together to improve livelihoods,” he noted.Mayor Atul underscored the value of private-public collaboration in urban renewal.
“MTN MoMo’s partnership strengthens our efforts to provide efficient, equitable, and environmentally responsible market services. Together, we are setting a benchmark for modern, community-focused urban markets,” he said.The initiative aligns with MTN MoMo’s Ambition 2025 framework, which prioritizes social impact, environmental sustainability, and inclusive community engagement. By working closely with city authorities and market stakeholders, MTN MoMo is demonstrating how corporate responsibility can positively shape urban life and economic opportunities.
