Forty-three Ugandan students who were recently evacuated from Iran amid rising Middle East tensions have safely arrived back in Uganda, ending days of uncertainty for both the students and their families.
The group was first relocated to Istanbul over the weekend before boarding a flight home. They landed at Entebbe International Airport on 05 March, where they were warmly welcomed by officials.
Among those who received the students was Balaam Barugahara, Uganda’s Minister of State for Youth, accompanied by other government representatives. The minister assured the students and their families of the government’s commitment to their safety.
Minister Barugahara highlighted that protecting Ugandans abroad, particularly during dangerous situations, remains a top government priority. He added that most of the students had travelled to Iran on government-sponsored scholarship programmes.
To ensure the students’ academic progress is not interrupted, the Ministry of Education and Sports will provide return tickets, allowing them to continue their studies in Iran once the security situation improves.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Uganda) confirmed that diplomatic missions in the region are prepared to assist Ugandan citizens in transit, ensuring safe passage through neighbouring countries if circumstances require.
The safe return of the students underscores the government’s quick response and coordination during emergencies affecting citizens abroad. Families and communities have expressed relief and gratitude for the swift measures taken.
As the students settle back home, authorities continue to monitor regional developments to protect Ugandans overseas, emphasizing that citizen safety remains a top priority for the nation.
