In a significant move to improve educational standards, former Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi has donated key learning tools to St. Mugagga Vocational Secondary School in Masaka. The donation includes two television sets, decoders, and a public address system, all aimed at enhancing the educational experience for over 1,000 students at the institution.
St. Mugagga, located in Kyanamukaaka, Masaka District, was established in 1991 by Ssekandi as a solution to the educational challenges faced by children in the region. Prior to the school’s creation, students had to travel long distances to attend other schools, making access to education difficult and contributing to high dropout rates. Today, with an enrollment of 1,008 students, St. Mugagga continues to face challenges related to communication and the delivery of lessons, particularly during school assemblies.
According to Oscar Mutebi, Ssekandi’s aide, the recent donation aims to address these ongoing challenges. The two television sets, paired with decoders, will give students the opportunity to engage with educational content, stay updated on current affairs, and enjoy leisure programming such as sports, creating a balanced learning experience in line with the school’s new curriculum.
Headteacher Peace Bukenya Magoba also shared how the public address system will drastically improve communication at the school. “With the large number of students, it’s often been hard for some of them to hear the teachers clearly during assemblies or lessons,” she explained. “The new public address system will ensure that every student, no matter their location in the hall, can hear all announcements and instructions properly.”
This donation has been met with widespread praise from parents, students, and local community leaders, who all recognize the positive impact it will have on the students’ overall learning experience. Many are particularly excited about the television access, which will broaden students’ perspectives by providing them with exposure to both national and global events, helping to nurture well-informed and global-minded citizens.
While the donation addresses immediate needs, challenges like limited internet access and water shortages still exist at the school. Mutebi assured the community that these issues are being tackled with the help of government and other partners, signaling a collective effort to further improve the school’s infrastructure.
Ssekandi’s contribution reflects his deep commitment to education in Kyanamukaaka. Over thirty years ago, he set out to create a school that would bring education closer to home for children in the area, and today, that vision continues to thrive. This latest donation further solidifies his lifelong dedication to enhancing the learning environment for the community.
The donation not only enhances the infrastructure of St. Mugagga but also speaks to Ssekandi’s enduring belief in the transformative power of education. Thanks to his generosity, the students of St. Mugagga Vocational School now have access to better tools and resources, giving them the foundation to succeed academically and in life.
