Minister for Kampala City Affairs Hajat Minsa Kabanda has challenged members of the Patriotic League Uganda (PLU) to take a leading role in mobilising communities to embrace government programmes designed to combat poverty and improve household incomes across the country.
Addressing supporters during the unveiling of the PLU Greater Luwero chapter, Kabanda said many Ugandans, particularly in rural areas, are yet to fully participate in the money economy despite the existence of several government interventions aimed at transforming livelihoods.
She noted that while numerous opportunities have been created to support economic empowerment, some citizens continue to overlook them and instead place blame on the government for their financial struggles. According to her, greater awareness and participation are key to achieving lasting change.
Kabanda emphasized the strong relationship between PLU and the National Resistance Movement (NRM), urging members to use their influence and networks to educate communities about initiatives that can help families increase their incomes and improve their standards of living.
The launch of the Greater Luwero chapter was held at Arizona Gardens in Busiika Town Council and marked a significant milestone for the organisation as it became the first chapter to be officially launched outside Kampala. The new chapter will coordinate activities across Luwero, Nakaseke, and Nakasongola districts.
The event attracted a number of prominent leaders, including Patriots Club chairperson Bob Kakuru, national leader Joshi Baguma, Desire Nangesha, Peace Keeza, Haruna Mbabaali, Timothy Sajawe, and Dr. Joseph Kibirige, who was unveiled as the regional chairperson for the area.
Ahead of the official launch, PLU members carried out community outreach activities in several schools, where they planted trees and welcomed students into the movement. The exercise formed part of the organisation’s broader environmental conservation campaign aimed at encouraging young people to take responsibility for protecting nature.
Kakuru reaffirmed PLU’s commitment to promoting patriotism and environmental stewardship, while Baguma pledged continued support for schools through conservation and sports initiatives. He also donated footballs and trophies to participating institutions, reinforcing the organisation’s commitment to youth development and community engagement.
