Ugandans are once again mourning the loss of innocent lives following a devastating road accident along the busy Masaka–Mutukula Highway that has now claimed eight people. The tragic crash, which involved a fuel tanker and a passenger taxi, has left families in grief and renewed concerns about road safety on one of the country’s busiest transport corridors.
The accident occurred on Wednesday along the Masaka–Mutukula Road when a fuel tanker, registration number T813DYP/T251DZH, collided with a taxi, registration number UBH 378W. Initial reports indicated that six people had died at the scene, while several others were rushed to hospital with severe injuries.
However, the death toll later rose from six to eight after two critically injured victims succumbed to their injuries at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital. The development deepened the sorrow already felt by relatives, friends, and members of the public who had hoped the injured passengers would recover.
Medical personnel at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital revealed that three critically injured survivors had been transferred from Kalisizo Hospital for specialized treatment. Doctors immediately began emergency procedures in an effort to save their lives.
According to Dr. Dikens Turyamusiima, one of the victims died only minutes after arriving at the hospital despite receiving blood transfusions and urgent medical attention. The patient had suffered severe head injuries, multiple fractures, and extensive bleeding that made survival extremely difficult.
The second victim fought for several hours after admission before eventually passing away. Doctors explained that the patient had sustained serious chest injuries, fractured ribs, severe head trauma, and excessive blood loss, which ultimately proved fatal despite all efforts to stabilize the condition.

Hospital staff disclosed that medical examinations, including a brain scan, showed significant swelling of the brain, a condition commonly associated with high-impact road crashes. Unfortunately, the injuries were too severe for the victim to overcome.
Amid the tragedy, there was at least one encouraging development. A third critically injured survivor who had initially been admitted unconscious reportedly regained consciousness after receiving treatment and is now recovering steadily under medical supervision.
Doctors said the patient suffered a mild head injury compared to the others and responded positively to treatment. Medical teams remain optimistic about the survivor’s recovery, although continued observation is necessary.
Health workers used the tragedy to remind road users about the dangers associated with road accidents. They noted that severe head injuries remain one of the leading causes of death among accident victims arriving at emergency units across the country.
Medical experts emphasized the importance of wearing protective gear, especially helmets for boda boda riders and passengers, saying such measures can significantly reduce fatalities and serious injuries.
One of the survivors, Michael Kaggwa, shared his painful recollection of the moments before the crash. Kaggwa said he remembers seeing several fuel tankers approaching from behind the taxi before everything suddenly went dark.
He explained that he later regained consciousness and was shocked to learn that some of the people he had been traveling with had lost their lives. The emotional trauma of surviving such a horrific incident is expected to remain with him for a long time.
Kaggwa said he was first taken to Kalisizo Hospital after the accident but has little memory of what happened afterward. He only later learned that he had been transferred to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for further treatment.
Meanwhile, three additional survivors who remained at Kalisizo Hospital are reportedly making progress and recovering from their injuries. Their families continue to pray for their full recovery as medical teams monitor their conditions.

As victims continue receiving treatment, survivors have appealed to authorities to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash and ensure that anyone found responsible is held accountable under the law.
The accident has also attracted the attention of law enforcement agencies. Greater Masaka Regional Police confirmed that the driver of the fuel tanker suspected of causing the accident has been arrested.
According to police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye, the driver, identified as Bosco Anthony, allegedly attempted to flee after the collision. However, security officers launched intelligence-led operations that eventually led to his arrest.
Police say the suspect is currently in custody and will face legal proceedings as investigations continue. Authorities have assured affected families that every effort will be made to establish the facts surrounding the tragedy.
Kasirye also urged motorists to exercise maximum caution, particularly on roads undergoing construction and maintenance works. He emphasized the need for drivers to obey traffic regulations, follow instructions from road workers, and avoid reckless behavior that could endanger lives.
As investigations continue, the devastating accident serves as another painful reminder of the heavy human cost of road crashes in Uganda. Families have lost loved ones, survivors face long recoveries, and an entire nation is left reflecting on the urgent need for greater road safety awareness to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
