National Unity Platform president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, is reportedly set to remain outside Uganda for at least another month as political tensions surrounding his return continue to intensify.
The opposition leader’s decision is said to have been influenced by growing concerns about his security and reports that he could face arrest immediately upon his return to the country.
The development comes at a time when Uganda’s political environment remains highly charged, with confrontations between opposition figures and senior government officials dominating public debate.
According to information shared within opposition circles, Kyagulanyi has chosen to postpone his return while continuing consultations with party leaders and supporters.
The NUP leader is also reported to have extended the leadership responsibilities of his deputy, Lina Zedriga, allowing her to continue overseeing the day-to-day affairs of the party during his absence.
The extension reportedly runs from June 16, 2026, to July 16, 2026, effectively keeping the party’s current interim arrangements in place for another month.

Party insiders say the move is intended to ensure continuity within the opposition movement while Kyagulanyi remains away.
The decision has immediately sparked speculation regarding the circumstances that may have informed the extension.
Some reports claim that concerns over possible legal and security challenges upon his return played a significant role in the decision-making process.
Others suggest that ongoing political negotiations and consultations within opposition ranks may also have contributed to the delay.
Kyagulanyi has remained one of Uganda’s most prominent opposition figures, regularly attracting both strong support and intense criticism from different sections of the political spectrum.
His absence from the country has therefore generated significant interest among supporters eager to know when he intends to return.
Meanwhile, NUP officials have sought to reassure party members that normal operations will continue despite the extended absence of their principal.
Supporters of the opposition leader argue that the current political climate requires caution and careful planning before any major decisions are made.
They contend that Kyagulanyi’s safety and political freedom remain important considerations given recent tensions involving opposition politicians.

Government supporters, however, have dismissed suggestions that the opposition leader faces extraordinary threats, insisting that all citizens are subject to the same laws and legal procedures.
Political analysts say the latest development highlights the continuing standoff between Uganda’s ruling establishment and opposition movements.
They note that Kyagulanyi’s political influence remains significant even while he is outside the country, with his statements and decisions continuing to shape national conversations.
The extension of his stay abroad is also likely to fuel fresh debate about the future direction of opposition politics ahead of upcoming political activities.
Observers believe the coming weeks will be closely watched for any indication of when the NUP president intends to return and what political strategy he plans to pursue thereafter.
For now, Kyagulanyi remains away from Uganda, while his party continues to operate under delegated leadership as speculation surrounding his eventual return continues to grow.
