Uganda’s political scene has been stirred after Anita Annet Among publicly sent birthday wishes to Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Norbert Mao, even as the two leaders appear headed for a possible contest over the Speakership of Parliament.
The message was shared on March 11, 2026 through the social media platform X (Twitter). In the brief but warm note, Among wished Mao good health and many more years of life, referring to him as her brother in a gesture that surprised many political observers.
Her post quickly attracted widespread attention online, with social media users flooding the comment section with mixed reactions. Some people applauded the Speaker for demonstrating respect and civility despite the political competition between them.
Others interpreted the message differently, suggesting that politics often involves unexpected alliances and friendly gestures even among rivals. A few commenters also joked that Mao might soon be challenging the very seat held by the person who wished him well.
The conversation comes shortly after Mao announced his intention to contest for the position of Speaker in the upcoming 12th Parliament. Having recently won election as a Member of Parliament, Mao now stands among the figures positioning themselves for leadership roles in the new House.
However, Among appears to hold a strong advantage in the race after receiving endorsement from the ruling National Resistance Movement Central Executive Committee, a move that significantly boosts her chances of retaining the position.
Her candidacy has also been backed by the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), an organization led by Chief of Defence Forces Muhoozi Kainerugaba. In a communication signed by the group’s Secretary General David Kabanda, members of Parliament-elect aligned with the group were encouraged to support the candidates endorsed by the NRM leadership.
Among has served as Speaker since 2022 and is widely considered the frontrunner as Uganda prepares for the opening of the 12th Parliament following the January 15, 2026 general elections. Once the new Parliament convenes, legislators will elect the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, setting the tone for leadership in the next parliamentary term.
