Tension gripped Kampala on Saturday evening after heavily armed security operatives reportedly stormed the residence of former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among on Mackinnon Road in a dramatic operation linked to ongoing investigations into alleged corruption and money laundering.
Witnesses said the operation intensified at around 8pm when officers were seen entering the luxurious residence carrying heavy-duty machines, including grinders and other breaching equipment believed to have been brought in to gain access to locked sections inside the property.
The deployment attracted attention from residents and bystanders as security personnel tightened access around the area while the operation continued deep into the night. Loud cutting noises were reportedly heard from inside the compound as officers attempted to force entry into certain rooms.
Earlier in the evening, Anita Among’s legal team led by Counsel Caleb Alaka arrived at the residence shortly after the raid began.
Sources indicated that disagreements quickly emerged between the lawyers and the Criminal Investigations Directorate search team over access to some areas of the house.
The reported standoff is believed to have prompted security officers to resort to forceful methods in order to continue with the search operation. Videos and images circulating online showed fire brigade personnel and security operatives moving specialized equipment in and out of the compound during the exercise.
According to reports from security sources quoted by local media, the operation was allegedly approved at the highest level, with claims that President Yoweri Museveni personally signed off on the raid as investigations into the former Speaker continue to widen.
Authorities are said to be searching for large sums of money suspected to be hidden inside the residence as investigators pursue allegations related to corruption and possible money laundering activities. However, official details surrounding the exact findings of the operation had not yet been released by Saturday night.
The dramatic raid has since triggered widespread debate across Uganda, with many citizens closely following developments surrounding one of the country’s most powerful political figures. As investigations continue, attention now turns to what authorities may uncover and whether more high-profile actions could follow in the coming days.
