Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda has pledged to continue pursuing truth, accountability and independent journalism as its platforms return following a month-long shutdown that affected its television, radio, print and digital operations.
The media company said its commitment to providing accurate information, holding leaders accountable and giving Ugandans a platform to discuss important issues remains unchanged despite the challenges it faced during the closure.
NMG made the statement as it began restoring its services after operations were suspended between June 28 and July 28, 2026, following a directive that led to the shutdown of its major platforms including Daily Monitor, NTV Uganda, KFM and Dembe FM.
In an editorial message released as the company resumed operations, NMG said the temporary closure had only strengthened its belief in the importance of independent journalism in society.
The company stated that its mission has always been to pursue truth, verify information and ensure that citizens have access to reliable news that helps them make informed decisions.
“Our return comes with a renewal of a commitment that has always defined the Nation Media Group, which is to pursue the truth, to provide verified information in an era of misinformation, and to create spaces for diverse voices within the framework of responsible journalism,” NMG said.

The media house noted that over the past three decades, its platforms have played a role in documenting Uganda’s achievements, challenges and major national conversations.
It added that its journalists have continued to report on government institutions, communities and ordinary citizens while promoting accountability and transparency.
NMG said the shutdown period reminded the company and the public about the important role journalism plays in protecting public interest and strengthening democracy.
The company thanked its readers, viewers, listeners, partners and members of the public who continued to support its platforms during the difficult period.
“Today, we return. We do so with gratitude for the patience, loyalty and unwavering support shown by our readers, viewers, listeners, partners, government officials and the wider public throughout this difficult period,” the company said.
The restoration of services will happen gradually, with digital platforms returning first before television and radio broadcasts fully resume.
NTV Uganda announced that it would initially return through online platforms, with selected news bulletins being available digitally as technical preparations continue.
Other platforms including KFM, Dembe FM and related services are also expected to resume operations in phases.
The shutdown began after security forces deployed at NMG offices in Kampala, restricting access for staff and forcing the company’s television and radio stations off air.
The closure attracted widespread debate about media freedom, accountability and the relationship between government institutions and independent media organizations.
Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces, had accused NMG platforms of biased reporting, inaccurate stories and what he described as hostility towards government programmes.
He argued that media organizations should promote responsible journalism and national interests while avoiding reporting that he considered unfair.
During discussions between NMG representatives and government officials, concerns were raised over several reports published by the company’s platforms.

The government later explained that the shutdown followed security concerns and investigations, while NMG engaged relevant authorities to find a way forward.
After discussions, President Yoweri Museveni approved a plan that allowed the media company to resume operations under agreed conditions.
NMG said it will continue focusing on professionalism, accuracy, fairness and courage as it returns to serving millions of Ugandans.
The company also appreciated its journalists, editors, producers, technical teams and other employees who remained committed during the period when operations were disrupted.
As Daily Monitor, NTV Uganda and other platforms return, NMG has assured the public that its responsibility to provide truthful information and promote accountability remains at the centre of its work.
The media group emphasized that its mission remains unchanged and that it will continue serving Ugandans through independent and responsible journalism.
